South Hams Arts Trail 2019

In the Cove Room at the Cottage Hotel and around South Devon

The Arts Trail, run by the South Hams Arts Forum, is one of the biggest art events in this area. It takes places this year in October and it will typically attract about 70 SHAF artists exhibiting and selling their work in 20+ venues across the South Hams. These venues are people's homes, artists' studios, pub function rooms, barns and more. We at The Cottage Hotel, Hope Cove have supported The Arts Trail from its conception, and this year we have decided to actually put The Cottage on The SHAF Arts Trail and our Cove Room will be one of the venues.

We have invited three very different artists to display some of their work in The Cove Room. Gilly Cotter creates beautiful hand built raku fired ceramics; she is also a printmaker and painter. Nick Cotter is a "digisurrealist", creating digital prints with dream-like qualities. Jane Mahood has the strap line "Love it and use it" for her mosaic pieces. Although they are intrinsically beautiful, Jane also wants her pieces to be functional so she specialises in mosaicked occasional tables, lazy susans, bowls, clocks, mirrors and trivets.

Materials found on the Trail

SHAF Members' skills are extremely diverse so the Arts Trail provides an opportunity for visitors to view and buy paintings, ceramics, sculpture, jewellery, lampshades, mosaics, hand-turned wooden items and furniture, felt, paper and textile art, photography, basketry, prints (woodcuts, linocuts, etchings, collagraphs, etc.), metal work (medals, pewter art pieces), collage, and much more … these beautiful hand-made items are all collectors pieces or, if you are feeling generous, a wonderful gift for someone you love.

During the Arts Trail we will be running special "arty" events – an Arts Trail Lunch, "From AT to Cream Tea", a Meet-the-Artist evening with drinks reception, and more. Keep an eye on this webpage for further details. We have a special Arts Trail package this year. Ask at reception, quoting Arts Trail 2019. The Arts Trail brochure (available from September) gives details of artists and venues. Visiting the different artists' locations is a wonderful way to explore the South Hams and The Cottage makes a perfect base to go out from and return to each night. It is fascinating to discover all the creative nooks and crannies of this beautiful area and there is never any obligation or pressure to buy. We do think, however, that you might pick up a few original gifts for Christmas or something a bit more self indulgent – a gift for yourself!

You will find the exact opening times of locations in the Arts Trail brochure, available from Reception, or you can download a digital version from the SHAF website – www.shaf.org.uk from September.
